Who can obtain US Passports? US citizens can apply and obtain their US passport. This brings up an interesting subject.

At many times in our history, the American laws have been changed and the US Constitution amended by The US Congress. Surprisingly, there are many people that have a claim to US citizenship without knowing it! Knowledge of the laws of the land and their effect in the past, present and future generations are essential for citizens and immigrants alike. These laws have created a variety of avenues to become a US citizen:

Naturalized US citizens, derived US citizens, automatic US citizens, just to mention a few. Therefore, for those born in foreign soil this fact alone, does not necessarily dictate your alien status.

Research of the past family history could uncover a claim to US citizenship which will allow you to obtain a US passport even if you are presently in an illegal status or residing outside the US .

Obtaining the proper documentation when applying for the passport will result in a determination of your status by the Department of State's Passport Agencies.

If you believe that you or a member of your family may have a claim to US citizenship, the cost of the process is a very small price to pay to have a lawful determination and perhaps obtain the US passport.
